The Musical Theatre Pianist and Conductor

The Musical Theatre repertoire has a way of exposing every gap in your playing. From your technique to your ability to switch effortlessly between jazz, pop and classical styles, to your understanding of groove and pocket or orchestral ensemble, you never really know what skill is going to come in handy next.

Additionally, many pianists are thrown onto the podium with little conducting experience or stick technique. Due to the nature of the commercial musical schedule, there is very little time to develop these fundamentals once rehearsals commence.

In this introductory workshop, over four sessions we will

  • Discuss the unique skillset required from the musical theatre musician including interpreting and playing a vocal score, communicating with directors and choreographers, coaching singers and taking company warmups.

  • Study two contrasting musical theatre pieces, including score marking, rehearsal strategies and how they are conducted.

  • Participate in group masterclasses with a singer and learn practical conducting techniques as they relate to two contrasting musical theatre pieces.

All participants must play the piano at an industry standard.

In person in Melbourne.
